The truth is Obama never really opposed same sex marriage. He has blasted the Supreme Court justices most likely to reject attempts to find such a "right" in the Constitution:

Obama has also praised current Justices Stephen G. Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David H. Souter. "I want people on the bench who have enough empathy, enough feeling, for what ordinary people are going through," Obama said.
These are Justices who recently have held that there is no death penalty for child rapists, foreign terrorists have a right to appear in U.S. Courts, states cannot ban sodomy, and that there is a right in the Constitution to partial birth abortion.
