Back in May, just after the California Supreme
Court decided the Marriage Cases, the L.A. Times published this profile
on Chief Justice Ron George.

Assuming the Times reported accurately, Chief Justice George seemed to
let some of his guard down, slightly, and for just a moment, about his
own feelings and motives on the same-sex marriage issue. This
unexpected paragraph startled me, probably more for its candor than
anything. I expected this sort of thing to be kept close to the vest,
at least for a while.
George,
who grew up in Los Angeles, said he counts gays among his friends. Four
years ago, he peered out his chambers’ windows across from San
Francisco City Hall to watch gay couples lining up to marry. He saw the
showers of rice, the popping of champagne corks, the euphoria of the
couples.
Nothing like a little context.
Or perspective. One man's feelings swing his reason. That one man swings
a court case. The court case swings the law. The law swings the
culture. And civilization. Maybe.
