Marriage Revolves Around Children

The Winter 2007 issue of Claremont Review of Books took a favorable look at David Blankenhorn's book, The Future of Marriage. Blankenhorn is a liberal Democrat who opposes same-sex marriage. (He also wrote Fatherless America.) According to reviewer F. Carolyn Graglia, the book is an "invaluable resource" in the marriage debate. Graglia says Blankenhorn's marriage's main purpose and concern isn't to fulfill immediate needs of adults, but the long-term needs of children and of society.

What children need most are mothers and fathers. Not caregivers. Not parent-like adults. Not even ‘parents.' What a child wants and needs more than anything else are the mother and the father who together made the child, who love the child, and who love each other.
To be sure, heterosexuals eroded this ideal, converting 1950s marriage culture into 1970s divorce culture. Today, more than 40% of all first marriages end in divorce (the rates for second and third marriages are even higher), and more than half of all U.S. children will spend "at least a significant part of their childhood living apart from their father." But redefining marriage to include same-sex couples, Blankenhorn argues, "would eliminate entirely in law, and weaken still further in culture, the basic idea of a mother and a father for every child," the precise purpose for which marriage was created. Same-sex marriage advocates deny this, arguing that sex and children are not at the heart of marriage, which they redefine as simply "a commitment between two people" in an "intimate, caring relationship." This definition, says Blankenhorn, is "wildly inadequate." He demonstrates that marriage developed as an institution in all human societies "to bridge the sexual divide, facilitate group living, and carry out reproduction." Essentially, "marriage is socially approved sexual intercourse between a woman and a man" within a relationship structured so that "any children resulting from the union are...emotionally, morally, practically, and legally affiliated with both of the parents."
You should be able to read all of Graglia's review here: http://www.claremont.org/publications/crb/id.1511/article_detail.asp

In the future, I'll be linking to and quoting from many Claremont articles from the past. In particular, political philosophy professor Harry Jaffa has had much to say on why homosexual union is a danger to society.

California Teachers Association Supports Gay Marriage & Opposes Prop. 8

Big Surprise! California's largest teachers' union, the California Teachers Association officially opposes Proposition 8, the California Marriage Protection Act. It advocates for homosexual marriage. CTA's political recommendations page is here http://www.cta.org/issues/current/campaign/ . It's fuller explanations and endorsements are here: http://www.cta.org/NR/rdonlyres/700D45BF-5ECE-4157-91D7-14D794EE093A/0/CTAPositionsinNovember2008Election71408.pdf).
In CTA's own words:
NO on Prop. 8 – Support Equality for All

• CTA believes that all people should be allowed equal protections under the law.
California’s Constitution should guarantee the same freedoms and rights to everyone –
no one group should be singled out to be treated differently.

• Equal protection under the law is the foundation of American society. In fact, teachers
focus on the guarantees of equal protection when teaching history or discussing the
Constitution. Prop. 8 mandates one set of rules for gay and lesbian couples and another
set of rules for everyone else. That’s not fair. California laws should treat everyone
equally.

• CTA policy states that “the legal rights and responsibilities of marriage and civil unions
belong to all adults, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability,
religion or socio-economic status.”

• Marriage equality is about treating everyone’s family fairly. The freedom to marry is
fundamental to our society. Gay and lesbian couples should not be singled out for unfair
treatment under the laws of our state. Committed and loving couples who want to
accept the responsibility that comes with marriage should be treated equally.
Action plan:  1.  Contact friends, family and neighbors who are public school teachers in California and call their attention to this endorsement. Ask them whether they support it. If not, ask them if they plan on withdrawing from the union. They should still have the option of paying a shop fee to benefit from collective bargaining. They are also protected by the Beck Supreme Court decision that allows them to withhold from the union a portion of their dues that would go to political activities.  2.  Consider withdrawing your children from California public schools. I don't know that I can afford to right now, but should Prop. 8 fail, I intend to move from California. I have seen first hand what the law does to the culture, especially to youth culture. I won't raise my youngest in this atmosphere. The textbooks with two dads and two moms are almost upon us.

The CTA endorsement is boneheaded for many reasons of principle as well as practice. Two spring to mind. First, Proposition 8 has nothing whatsoever to do with "equal protection" of the laws. That is a legal concept that depends on the compared parties being similarly situated. I can think of no greater contrast than that between traditional, heterosexual marriage to homosexual marriage. The first requires a man and a woman. Society and the human race require such union to perpetuate themselves. The second, by definition, requires that the couple NOT consist of a man and a woman. Men and women are different to such an extent that being married to and sexually united to the one, can be nothing at all like being married to and sexually united with the other. Heterosexual marriage propagates the race, enlarges the economy, and increases human happiness. Homosexual marriage on its best day can do none of that.

Second, I believe society and the human race are done harm by a multiplicity of same-sex marriages. As tolerance for homosexual union and marriage increase, as the law turns to bless what it once forbid, we shall continue to see increase in homosexual identification, and in homosexual behavior, union and marriage. Whether some are "born that way," certainly all are not, and we know that because the homosexual fertility rate should be expected to breed the trait of homosexuality out of existence, or nearly so. But the percentage seems to maintain itself. In other words, conversion is going on. So here's what is going to happen, and it's drenched in irony so stark only a teachers' union could miss it. By endorsing Proposition 8, CTA is supporting an institution that will harm California's fertility rate and result in less children attending California public schools.

CTA is killing the goose that lays its golden egg.

Boycotts Against Prop. 8 Donors

Now the homosexual activist lobby is boycotting a San Diego hotel owner's two hotels, for the sin of donating over $100,000 to help put California's Defense of Marriage Act on the fall ballot.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20080710-9999-1m10boycott.html

The hotelier's name is Doug Manchester. His two hotels being boycotted in San Diego are the Grand Hyatt, and the Grand Del Mar. I don't know about you, but next time I'm in San Diego, if I can manage to scrape up a few extra pennies, that's where I'm going to stay. Business can't be left to think the homosexual activist lobby can make or break them. If that happens, they win, we lose. It will be that simple.

Of Obama, the Media, and the Marriage Issue

In a previous post below, I called attention to Barak Obama's opposition to the California Marriage Protection Act. (CMPA, Prop. 8.) But he also opposed other important things, waffled, and got away with it by means of help from the media. Nobody puts it better than Rush:
Barack Obama opposed the surge, opposed victory, and opposed helping Iraqis. Now, the Drive-By Media covers for him and reports his brilliant strategies won victory in Iraq and Afghanistan. Stalin didn't get this kind of coverage from Pravda. There's going to be a backlash against the press over this.
Expect the press to act similarly in the California marriage battle. Expect the media to support the opposition to Prop. 8, to try and make its proponents look like foolish reactionaries, or like citizens from Mayberry. And expect it to act sanctimoniously and feign objectivity all the while. The only way to counter this is by a determined grass roots effort.

Dennis Prager Shows Interracial Marriage In No Way Resembles Same-Sex Marriage

Those aware of this little, obscure blog should already be long aware of Dennis Prager's excellent radio show, his website and written work, and his specific views on same-sex marriage. His latest written column makes an essential point in the arguments--legal and moral--against same-sex marriage.  http://dennisprager.townhall.com/columnists/DennisPrager/2008/07/15/false_equation_opposing_same-sex_marriage_and_opposing_interracial_marriage?page=full&comments=true
His main point is so simple and compelling, one must suppose either ignorance or knavery on the part of judges who hold that the anti-miscegenation decisions have any thing to do with the current debate:
There are enormous differences between men and women, but there are no differences between people of different races. Men and women are inherently different, but blacks and whites (and yellows and browns) are inherently the same. Therefore, any imposed separation by race can never be moral or even rational; on the other hand, separation by sex can be both morally desirable and rational. Separate bathrooms for men and women is moral and rational; separate bathrooms for blacks and whites is not.
Read the entire article. It will arm you well for discussion with friends and neighbors who are still susceptible to persuasion.

Same-Sex Marriage Does Affect Others

My friend, Richard Reeb, is a retired journalism and political science professor from Barstow College. He writes some of the most thoughtful essays and columns on politics, journalism, morality and philosophy available today. His work frequently appears in the Desert Dispatch newspaper. This piece on same-sex marriage appeared several weeks ago there. As with Prager's column, linked below, you should read the whole thing.

Same-sex Marriage and Schism

The plague of same-sex marriage is causing rifts in some churches. It appears that the Methodist central governing bodies are holding firm, but the regional ones in California are caving in, as are many retired pastors who have little to lose.

New Field Poll Has Marriage on the Ropes

Passing Prop. 8, the California Marriage Protection Act is going to be an uphill climb. A majority of California voters now opposes the Act. From Friday's Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121640587990265829.html)

According to the Field Poll, 51% of California voters surveyed said they would oppose Proposition 8, a ballot measure that would amend the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman, thus banning same-sex marriage. Forty-one percent of voters surveyed said they would vote "yes" on the measure, according to the statewide survey that was completed this week.

If we do nothing about this except knock on a few doors at the last minute, the measure will fail and the California Supreme Court decision will have successfully turned our state into Caligomorrha.

CMPA--Prop. 8 Survives for Fall Ballot

Good news. The California Supreme Court declined to hear a case seeking to keep the California Marriage Protection Act, aka Prop. 8, off the November ballot. In other words, it stays. The People should have their say.

The McDonalds Boycott & the Homosexual Political Agenda

Mayor McCheese, the Grimace and the Hamburglar just went political in support of the homosexual agenda. Apparently thinking the same-sex marriage crowd deserves a break today, McDonald's has begun opposing the California Marriage Protection Act.

Obama Running Against Himself on Same Sex Marriage

Wrap your mind around this flip-flop: (short version)

http://campaignspot.nationalreview.com/post/?q=Y2VkMjk0Mjg5NTllOGJiMGI2MTQ0MDIxMzYyNTk3OTM=

(long version) http://campaignspot.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZWJjODc5YmVlYzRlNTllMjQwMWUyMGNmMmFiYTA5ODI=

The truth is Obama never really opposed same sex marriage. He has blasted the Supreme Court justices most likely to reject attempts to find such a "right" in the Constitution: http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/07/17/274143.aspx

And he favors Justices who are most likely to find in the Constitution a right to same-sex marriage:
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-scotus19-2008may19,0,4169081.story
Obama has also praised current Justices Stephen G. Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David H. Souter. "I want people on the bench who have enough empathy, enough feeling, for what ordinary people are going through," Obama said.
These are Justices who recently have held that there is no death penalty for child rapists, foreign terrorists have a right to appear in U.S. Courts, states cannot ban sodomy, and that there is a right in the Constitution to partial birth abortion.

How Evil Takes Over

This article is my favorite short explanation of how and why vice and evil progress through a society until they are deemed, "good," and good is deemed evil. It was published in National Review in 1996. How prescient it was. Should the California Marriage Protection Act fail to pass, the implications are alarming.
